How does SmartSight work?

With SmartSight, the femtosecond laser forms a pre-calculated lenticule in the corneal tissue. At the same time, it prepares small, peripheral incisions in the uppermost corneal layer. The lenticule is extracted through these tiny incisions (approx. 2.5-3 mm). The microscope integrated in the SCHWIND ATOS facilitates removal.

With SmartSight, there is no corneal flap, which can cause complications. There is also no laser ablation – as with the excimer laser, for example – so that the tissue is gently cut out and not thrown away.

Requirements for SmartSight

Not every visual defect can be corrected with SmartSight. Lenticule extraction is a particularly promising treatment method for the following visual defects:

Farsightedness cannot yet be treated with SmartSight. However, there are other procedures that can improve vision for long-sightedness. During the preliminary examination, it is also checked whether SmartSight cannot be used because the cornea is too thin or because of corneal scarring.

The visual defect should have been stable for at least twelve months and the patient’s current state of health should allow such an operation – e.g. no infections or cataracts.

SmartSight treatment procedure

The individual treatment steps with the femtosecond laser have already been explained at the beginning. But what about SmartSight before and aftercare?

Before SmartSight lenticule extraction

A detailed preliminary examination with diagnostic equipment is essential for safe and effective treatment. During this SmartSight preliminary examination, we will check whether your eyes are suitable for the procedure, what special features need to be taken into account during the procedure and how the rest of the treatment with SmartSight will proceed.

You will also receive comprehensive information about the procedure, the possible results, the risks and the SmartSight costs.

Healing process with SmartSight

Your vision is already significantly improved the day after the operation. After the SmartSight procedure, you can leave the laser eye center immediately to recover at home. For optimal healing, you should take care of your eyes in the days following the procedure and protect them from bright light during the day by wearing sunglasses. After a SmartSight treatment, you can even do without wearing protective goggles / protective flaps at night.

Within a few days, you will notice a significant improvement in your vision. As soon as the healing process is complete, you will be able to enjoy your newfound quality of life and vision in the long term.

Following your SmartSight treatment, there are two follow-up appointments at EYELASER to check the healing progress and treat any complications. One appointment takes place shortly after the procedure. The other is after a few weeks, when the final result can be checked.

Lenticular extraction with the Schwind ATOS laser:

With the ATOS laser, the manufacturer Schwind-EyeTech-Solutions has created a new generation of femtosecond lasers that are ideal for performing SmartSight. It enables minimally invasive lenticule extraction and flap creation with a single device. The Schwind ATOS laser supports the surgeon with a number of innovative features that make the treatment even safer:

  • Pupil detection in real time
  • Cyclotorsion compensation and precise centering of the eye along the visual axis.
  • Connection to diagnostic devices possible

Because the ATOS laser is so compact, it can be used flexibly and the patient can be treated comprehensively with just one device. It is faster, more comfortable and safer.

Automatic cyclotorsion compensation makes the correction of corneal curvature more precise. The image from the diagnostics is compared in real time with the image during the operation. This automatically compensates for errors – for example, if the patient’s head is tilted. This ensures more precise vision correction and safety.

Risks of the SmartSight method?

The SmartSight procedure is extremely safe and involves minimal risks for the patient. The advanced technology of the laser and the gentle treatment make it possible. In particular, the fact that there is practically no flap means that flap-related complications are ruled out. The eye tracking of the Schwind ATOS prevents injuries and ensures maximum precision.

Immediately after treatment, you may experience slight pain, itching or a foreign body sensation in the eye. However, these symptoms are temporary and will disappear within a few days. You can wear sunglasses after the procedure to reduce the sensitivity of your eyes to light. Permanent damage is extremely rare – not least because we act immediately in the event of problems and initiate the appropriate treatment steps.
