Insurance & tax deductibility

What many people don’t know: in Austria, laser eye treatment can be claimed for tax purposes under certain conditions. We answer the most common questions about this, as well as the role of your health insurance provider, here.

Will my health insurance cover the costs of laser eye surgery at EyeLaser?

No. The Austrian statutory health insurers — ÖGK, SVS and BVAEB — generally do not cover laser treatment to correct a refractive error, because statutory insurance only pays for medically necessary care and glasses count as adequate. EyeLaser is a private practice and does not bill through the statutory insurers.

Cover is examined in these cases: cataract surgery with a monofocal lens (paid by the statutory insurer; any surcharge for premium lenses is yours); documented intolerance of both glasses and contact lenses; more than 10 dioptres with documented contact lens intolerance; a difference of more than 3 dioptres between the eyes with documented contact lens intolerance. We check this at the pre-examination — the insurer decides.

Private supplementary insurance covers the cost in full, in part or not at all, depending on your policy. Ask before the procedure and get the confirmation in writing.

Can I deduct laser eye surgery at EyeLaser from my taxes?

Yes, the costs of laser eye surgery or lens implants are the same as the costs of glasses or contact lenses and are deductible as medical expenses.

The current income tax guidelines state: “In the presence of an illness, visual aids, including laser treatments, are necessary to improve eyesight and are tax-deductible.”

Patients who undergo such an operation have a visual defect and therefore a medical condition. Therefore, these costs are generally recognized as extraordinary expenses even without a medical certificate proving the medical necessity of the procedure.

Deducting laser eye surgery from tax

This is how it works: Enter the cost of the eye operation in the “Medical expenses” column of your annual tax assessment. You can enter the total costs. But there is a deductible of 6 to 12% of your annual income, depending on how high it is. This percentage is reduced by approximately 1% in certain circumstances (single earner, single parent, etc.).

The Ministry of Finance calculates your deductible. The remaining treatment costs affect your tax deductibility.

Exception: If the procedure was medically necessary and you have a certificate to prove this, you can deduct the full amount.

Find out more about extraordinary costs (§ 33 EStG) from the Ministry of Finance. If in doubt, please find out about the tax deductibility of your operating costs.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about laser eye surgery costs

Here you will find answers to the most important questions about the costs of laser eye treatment. From price overviews and financing options to cost coverage by health insurance – we have summarized the most common concerns of our patients for you.

Approximately how much does laser eye surgery cost?

At EyeLaser in Vienna, laser eye surgery costs €1,700 to €3,000 per eye, depending on the procedure: Trans-PRK €1,700, Femto-LASIK €1,950, SmartSight €2,500; the wavefront-guided variants and SmartSight NOVA cost €3,000. Medication and eye drops, twelve months of aftercare and surgery by the chief physician are included. The pre-examination costs €200 and is credited towards treatment; the suitability test is free.

What factors influence the cost of laser eye surgery?

The technology used, the selected laser eye clinic and the location are decisive for the laser eye surgery price. For guaranteed high medical quality, a provider within Austria is the best choice. High-end laser devices, such as those used at EyeLaser Vienna, cost a little more, but offer a high degree of precision and safety.

But in the end, the surgeon’s experience, the extensive pre- and post-operative care and the re-treatment period included in the price also play a role in the pricing.

Does health insurance cover the costs of laser eye surgery?

In Austria, statutory health insurance companies do not generally cover the costs, as laser eye surgery is considered a “cosmetic” procedure – as opposed to a medically necessary procedure. There are exceptions in cases of medical necessity. For example, due to extremely high visual defects or an intolerance to visual aids.

Private health insurances and supplementary insurances often cover the costs. However, this depends on the contract taken out and the agreed services.

Incidentally, you can claim the costs of laser eye surgery as an extraordinary expense in your tax return.

Are there financing options or installment payments for refractive surgery?

Yes, there are often flexible financing models offered either by the clinic itself or in cooperation with a bank that offers a loan. At EyeLaser, you can pay for your treatment without a loan in 3 convenient installments within 6 months, interest-free. Alternatively, you can take out a loan with a partner bank, which allows you to pay only a small monthly amount (from approx. 30 euros) at attractive conditions.

What is included in the price of laser eye treatment?

That depends on the provider. Ideally, the price should include everything that is necessary from a medical point of view. Above all, this includes the preliminary examination, the procedure, any materials (e.g. lenses) and the follow-up appointments. In addition, a re-treatment within a defined period is often included in the price. However, it is important to read the small print.

Costs for additional services such as contact lens simulations or special lens surgery are shown separately. Transparency in pricing is a decisive factor when choosing the right clinic.
