Keratoconus – cornea in comparison
Healthy cornea
A healthy cornea is characterized by
- Smooth surface
- Uniform corneal thickness
- Uniform rounding in all directions
Regular corneal curvature
Regular astigmatism is when the cornea is no longer uniformly rounded.
The curvature of the cornea no longer resembles a ball, but rather an oval body.
Symptoms such as distorted vision can be compensated for with visual aids.
Keratoconus
Keratoconus is a progressive disease.
The irregular curvature of the cornea becomes visible during a corresponding examination:
- Flat cornea in the upper area
- Protrusion in the lower area
The main symptom is a reduction in the quality of vision.
Symptoms include complaints regarding night vision, distorted vision or double and multiple images.
Visual aids can only provide relief in the early stages.
Changes in corneal curvature
A change in corneal curvature is always a reason to look for the cause.
Normally, astigmatism remains the same from birth at any age.
If several eye examinations have shown that there is a change, you should consult a specialist.
