What: Femto-LASIK creates a thin corneal flap with the femtosecond laser; the excimer laser reshapes the cornea underneath. Bladeless.

What if …? The most common worries before Femto-LASIK

Almost everyone who comes to us has the same questions in mind and does not always dare to ask them. Here are the honest answers.

“Does it hurt?”

No. The eye is numbed with drops. While the laser creates the corneal flap, you feel pressure for about 20 seconds, not pain. In the afternoon the eyes burn and water for a few hours, like after a day at the sea; by the evening it is usually over.

“What if I blink or move?”

A soft lid holder keeps the eye open; blinking is simply not possible. The laser’s eye tracking measures your eye position more than 1,000 times per second and adjusts every pulse. If you move too much, the laser stops by itself and continues at exactly the same spot.

“Could I go blind?”

The laser works exclusively on the cornea, a few tenths of a millimetre deep. The retina and optic nerve, which are decisive for sight, are not touched. The real, very rare risk is an infection. Against that stand a sterile theatre, antibiotic drops and the check the next day, at which we see any problem early.

“What if the result isn’t right?”

A slight under- or overcorrection is rare, because we only treat stable prescriptions and measure the cornea individually. If it does happen, re-treatment within 12 months is included in the fixed price. We do not guarantee a medical result, but we stand behind it.

“Does it last forever?”

The correction of your short- or long-sightedness is permanent; the cornea does not grow back. What remains is the normal ageing of the eye: from about 45, presbyopia sets in, regardless of the treatment. There are solutions for that later too, such as PresbyMAX or a lens exchange.

“I can’t bring myself to decide.”

You don’t have to today. The first step is a preliminary examination with the chief surgeon, without obligation. Only the measurements show whether Femto-LASIK is the right method for you at all. After that you have as much time to think as you need. Nobody is pushed into an appointment here.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

Is the Femto-LASIK treatment painful?

No, the procedure itself is completely painless thanks to anesthesia. During the treatment, you will only feel a slight sensation of pressure on the eye. After the operation, your eyes may water or sting slightly for a short time.

How long does the procedure take?

The entire treatment for both eyes usually only takes 10 to 15 minutes. The pure laser time is less than 30 seconds per eye.

When can I return to work after the operation?

Most patients are able to return to work after just one or two days. However, we recommend relieving the strain on the eyes from time to time when working at a computer screen.

Is the result permanent?

Yes, the vision correction performed with the Femto-LASIK method is permanent. However, it is important to know that it does not prevent age-related farsightedness (presbyopia), which can occur from around the age of 45.

Is it possible to have both eyes lasered at the same time?

Yes, the standard procedure is to treat both eyes directly one after the other. This allows both eyes to heal faster and more efficiently at the same time.

What happens if I blink or move my eye during lasing?

Our modern eye tracking system is responsible for this, correcting even the slightest eye movement in real time. If the movement is too strong, the laser stops automatically to ensure the safety and accuracy of the procedure.

How long do I have to wait to exercise?

Light sport, such as walking, is possible again after just a few days. However, you should avoid swimming, sauna visits or contact sports for 2 to 4 weeks to minimize the risk of infection.

Can Femto-LASIK be repeated?

Yes, a repeat procedure is possible in principle. The most important prerequisite for this is that the cornea is thick enough to allow further treatment to be carried out safely.

Does the health insurance company cover the costs?

In Austria, the costs of laser eye surgery are not covered by statutory health insurance. However, private supplementary insurance often covers at least part of the costs.

Am I very sensitive to light after the operation?

Immediately after the procedure, the eyes may be more sensitive to light for a short time. Wearing good sunglasses is therefore strongly recommended for the first few days.

From what age is treatment possible?

Laser eye treatment is only possible from the age of 18. It is also important that your vision has been stable for at least one year.

What is the difference to classic LASIK?

The main difference lies in the way the so-called flap, the thin corneal flap, is created. In Femto-LASIK, this flap is created precisely using a femtosecond laser, whereas in classic LASIK, a mechanical microkeratome is used for this purpose.

Can I drive after the operation?

No, you are not allowed to drive yourself immediately after the operation. However, most patients can safely drive again after one to two days.

Is there a guarantee for the result?

A medical result cannot be guaranteed, and we do not promise one. What we do commit to: should a re-treatment be necessary within 12 months, it is included in the fixed price. In an emergency you can reach the surgeon around the clock, and follow-up checks follow our quality-assurance schedule.

What if I am not suitable for Femto-LASIK?

If Femto-LASIK is not an option for you, there are alternative procedures for vision correction. These include Trans-PRK or the use of implantable contact lenses (ICL) and premium lenses.
