These days, there is a suitable treatment for almost every visual defect. Nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism can be corrected effectively. In individual cases, however, it also depends on age, corneal thickness, eye anatomy and general health. Patients with presbyopia have the chance of clear vision thanks to special techniques (e.g. PresbyMAX or lens replacement). And for high as well as complex visual defects, lens surgery is an option instead of laser eye surgery.

As a rule, the answer is: yes. Nearsightedness can be corrected up to around -8 diopters and farsightedness up to +5 diopters. This applies to Femto-LASIK, Trans-PRK and SmartSight. For astigmatism, laser eye surgery has a limit of around 5 diopters. If you have more severe ametropia, you can opt for phakic lenses, which can also permanently correct higher visual defects.

Yes. Presbyopia can be treated with special laser procedures such as PresbyMAX or monovision. This improves near vision without restricting distance vision. Sometimes, correcting presbyopia with artificial lenses is also an option. Mono- or multifocal lenses replace the lens in the eye that has become rigid and provide sharp vision across all distances.

Whenever the limits for laser eye surgery are exceeded, alternatives must be considered. But a cornea that is too thin, severe corneal irregularities or systemic diseases can also be contraindications for laser eye surgery. Exclusion criteria also include being under 18 and a visual defect that has changed within the last 12 months.

The only way to know is a professional suitability test or pre-examination. It is not reliably possible to determine for yourself whether you can have your eyes lasered. At the ophthalmologist or surgeon, numerous examinations are carried out to show whether laser eye surgery is possible and makes sense. These include measuring diopters, corneal thickness, corneal condition, pupil size and other anatomical factors.
