Repetition of crosslinking
In principle, crosslinking can be repeated.
However, some factors and the reasons must be considered.
There is only a low rate of three to seven percent where the CXL treatment does not work.
With both methods – EPI-ON and EPI-OFF – it is possible to repeat the treatment in this case.
If the treatment was unsuccessful due to hormonal fluctuations, it must be decided on an individual basis how appropriate a follow-up treatment is.
Hormone fluctuations are caused, for example
for example, due to pregnancy, breastfeeding or endocrine diseases.
Follow-up treatment after several years
In a few patients, the effect of crosslinking wears off after a few years – the cornea may bulge again and the ectasia may progress.
In this case, a new treatment with CXL is also possible.
Better effect after second treatment
A double treatment with CXL should even improve the effect.
This means that the cornea becomes even firmer after the second treatment and the likelihood of deterioration is further reduced.
