Laser eye surgery for astigmatism In an eye with normal vision, the cornea is shaped in such a way that light rays are focused and directed to the point of sharpest vision (focal point).
If the cornea is curved (also known as astigmatism), the two main axes of the cornea have different radii of curvature and therefore different refractive powers.
The greater this difference, the greater and more disturbing the corneal curvature.
This results in an uncontrolled, increased refractive power along certain visual axes.
This leads to the perception of distorted images.
Objects are often seen twice or with an adjacent shadow.
In laser eye surgery with astigmatism, either the high refractive axis of the cornea is flattened or the flat one is adjusted.
Irregular astigmatism is characterized by different refractive powers at different parts of the cornea.
This means that the cornea has an irregular surface, which causes the light rays to be refracted irregularly.
A corneal curvature can also be caused by an eye injury or by an unevenly progressive clouding of the eye.
