The Schwind ATOS laser forms a pre-calculated lenticule in the corneal tissue. This lenticule is removed through small incisions, which are also made by the femtosecond laser. The procedure is extremely gentle on the tissue, as the incisions are only around three millimetres in size. Flap-related risks and complications are therefore completely eliminated. The microscope connected to the ATOS facilitates the removal of the lenticule.
By removing the lenticule, the visual or refractive error is corrected so that the patient no longer suffers from the previous visual defect after the minimally invasive procedure.
All surgical steps can be performed with the Schwind ATOS. This ensures a short operation time, the patient does not have to be treated with a second device and the surgeon is supported by software features.
Treatment with SmartSight is suitable for people who suffer from short-sightedness or astigmatism (also known as astigmatism). For the Schwind ATOS femtosecond laser to be used, the following threshold values must be met:
A cornea that is too thin, corneal scarring, a cataract or instability of the visual defect can be exclusion criteria, but these are discovered during a preliminary examination. For patients who cannot be treated with ATOS, there are numerous other procedures for correcting visual defects.

The design and technical equipment of the Schwind ATOS is perfectly adapted to the SmartSight lenticule extraction process.
The modern eye tracking system with smart pupil detection and cyclotorsion compensation (more on this in a moment) enables the eye to be precisely centered along the visual axes. This makes it easier to treat high astigmatism in particular. The centering is easy to adjust and the additional monitor makes it particularly convenient for the surgeon to use.
Automatic cyclotorsion compensation makes the correction of corneal curvature more precise. The image from the diagnostics is compared in real time with the image during the operation. This automatically compensates for errors – for example, if the patient’s head is tilted. This ensures more precise vision correction and safety.
For the procedure to be comfortable for the patient, the contact element must adapt perfectly to the eye. The curved contact element of the Schwind ATOS is quickly fitted thanks to the optimized suction and SmartSight can be started. The design and filter function make additional tubes and filters superfluous. The shape has been chosen so that as little pressure as possible is exerted on the eye.
Thanks to its fixed suction, adaptability and integrated filter, SmartSight is comfortable for the patient, enables a quick procedure and supports the eye surgeon.
The lasers from Zeiss, J&J and Ziemer are also ultra-modern devices which, with the ReLEx SMILE and Clear procedures, have their raison d’être in refractive surgery. Ultimately, the decision for one of the three lasers is left to the eye clinic and depends on individual preferences.
