Interactively explore the different types of premium lenses, their special optics and characteristic properties. With our 3D model, you can view the lenses from all perspectives and understand their special features.

Detailed technology comparison of the premium lenses

To better understand the differences between the various premium lenses, we have created a detailed comparison of the most important parameters. This will help you to recognize the specific strengths of each technology.

Monofocal premium lenses

Optical principle: The monofocal lens concentrates the incident light onto a single, perfectly defined focal point. The entire light energy is used for an optimum distance.

Most important advantages:

  • Unsurpassed image quality at the set distance
  • Excellent contrast perception even in difficult lighting conditions
  • Minimal optical side effects such as glare sensitivity or halos
  • Immediate neuroadaptive adjustment without a long familiarization period

Special features:

  • Aspherical optics for improved edge sharpness
  • Blue light filter to protect the retina
  • High-quality edge design for post-cataract prevention
  • Optimized materials for maximum biocompatibility

EDOF lenses (Extended Depth of Focus)

Optical principle: EDOF lenses use wavefront technology to create an extended focus range. Instead of a punctual focus, a flowing sharp area is created, similar to a depth of field extension in photography.

Most important advantages:

  • Extended focus range from the distance to the mid-range
  • Smooth transitions between the visual areas without “jumps”
  • Significantly reduced optical side effects compared to multifocal lenses
  • Particularly natural viewing experience with fast adaptation

Special features:

  • Wavefront-optimized surface geometry
  • Optimized light energy use for all distances
  • Reduced chromatic aberration thanks to special design elements
  • Improved contrast sensitivity compared to multifocal lenses

Multifocal premium lenses

Optical principle: Multifocal lenses have a special ring zone optic that distributes the incident light to several defined focal points. This creates clearly focused areas for distance, medium and near vision.

Most important advantages:

  • Maximum eyewear independence for all relevant fields of vision
  • Clear vision from the reading distance to the horizon
  • Maximum flexibility for changing visual requirements
  • Comprehensive suitability for everyday use without visual aids

Special features:

  • Diffractive and/or refractive optics for optimized light distribution
  • Trifocal design for additional intermediate vision
  • Optimized light energy use for all distances
  • Special surface treatment for reduced optical phenomena

Toric premium lenses

Optical principle: Toric lenses have a special astigmatic surface that specifically compensates for the individual curvature of the cornea (astigmatism). This creates a distortion-free image on the retina.

Most important advantages:

  • Precise correction of astigmatism
  • Significantly improved quality of vision without cylindrical lenses
  • Reduced glare sensitivity and improved contrast perception
  • Can be combined with all the premium lens technologies mentioned above

Special features:

  • Precision-calculated astigmatic surface geometry
  • Special stabilization haptics against rotation
  • Optimized marking systems for precise axle positioning
  • State-of-the-art calculation algorithms for maximum accuracy

Detailed comparison of visual quality

Monofocal vs. EDOF vs. multifocal

To better understand the special properties of EDOF technology, a close comparison with other modern lens options is helpful. Imagine looking through different photographic lenses – each has its own strengths and optimal areas of application.

Basic functional principles

The basic functional principles of these technologies are fundamentally different:

  • Monofocal lens: Concentrates the light on a single, perfect focal point
  • EDOF lens: Creates a continuous area of good vision with a smooth transition
  • Multifocal lens: Works with several clearly defined focal points, similar to varifocal spectacles

Practical differences in everyday life

When working with a screen:

  • EDOF: Natural, fatigue-free transition between different documents and screen distances
  • Multifocal: Several defined sharp zones that must be switched between
  • Monofocal: sharp vision only at one distance, other distances require glasses

When driving:

  • EDOF: Clear, high-contrast vision with minimal light effects
  • Multifocal: Possibly stronger perception of halos around light sources
  • Monofocal: Optimum distance vision and best contrast perception without optical phenomena

In social situations:

  • EDOF: Effortless switching between conversation partners and table distance
  • Multifocal: Very good near vision, but may require greater adaptation
  • Monofocal: Perfect vision at one distance, other distances require a change of glasses

Precision and post-correction options

Modern lens surgery achieves a high degree of precision, but various factors can still influence the exact target refraction. Current statistics show that

  • Approximately 85% of patients achieve ±0.5 diopters of target refraction
  • About 95% achieve ±1.0 diopters
  • A larger deviation can occur in about 5% of patients

Reasons for deviations can be:

  • Individual healing processes influence the final lens position
  • The shape of the cornea may change slightly during healing
  • Eye length characteristics make exact prediction difficult
  • Variations in natural lens capsule shrinkage

The option of laser vision correction offers an excellent solution with the following advantages:

  • Accurate to within 0.1 diopters
  • Outpatient procedure lasting around 10 minutes
  • Very fast recovery
  • High predictability of results

Proven strategies for optimal results

Micromonovision as an optimization option

Micromonovision with EDOF lenses offers a particularly elegant way of optimizing near vision. With this sophisticated adaptation, a minimal difference (maximum 0.5 diopters) is set between the two eyes:

  • Improved near vision without noticeable impairment of spatial vision
  • Significantly fewer optical side effects compared to multifocal lenses
  • Near vision comparable to multifocal lenses
  • Faster and easier adaptation than with classic monovision

Possible combinations of different lens types

In certain cases, a combination of different types of lenses may be the optimal solution for both eyes:

  • Mix-and-match strategy: combination of a multifocal lens with an EDOF lens
  • Asymmetric restoration: Different correction ranges for dominant and non-dominant eye
  • Customized solutions: Individual lens combinations for special visual requirements
  • Adaptation-optimized fitting: Easier adaptation thanks to optimized lens combination

Frequently asked questions about premium lenses

What is the difference between premium and standard lenses?

A standard (monofocal) lens has one focal point, usually for distance. Premium lenses do more: toric lenses also correct astigmatism, EDOF lenses cover distance to screen, multifocal and trifocal lenses add near vision. Which one fits follows from the measurements and your visual habits.

Do premium lenses cost more at EyeLaser?

No. At EyeLaser Vienna cataract surgery including the lens costs €3,500 per eye regardless of lens type. Added to that are the pre-examination at €200 and, optionally, the femtosecond laser at €1,000. The lens choice is therefore purely medical, not a budget decision.

Which premium lens is the best?

There is no best lens for everyone. What matters is the cornea, pupil size, eye length, tear film and the distances at which you want to see sharply in daily life. These factors are measured and discussed in the pre-examination; only then is a recommendation made.

Can I do without glasses completely with a premium lens?

With multifocal and trifocal lenses most patients manage daily life without glasses. EDOF lenses cover distance and screen; light reading glasses may remain necessary for very small print. Monofocal lenses need reading glasses for near. No lens guarantees complete spectacle independence.

What are halos, and which lenses cause them?

Halos are rings of light around light sources, mainly at night. They occur most often with multifocal lenses in the first weeks and months and usually fade as the brain adapts. EDOF lenses produce far fewer halos, monofocal lenses the fewest. Frequent night drivers should weigh this in their choice.

How long does a premium lens last?

A lifetime. The lens material does not change or cloud. What can occur months or years after surgery is posterior capsule opacification, a clouding of the lens capsule. It is removed with the YAG laser in a few minutes on an outpatient basis.
