In principle, the SmartSight or Relex Smile method is only not recommended if the treating dentist does not have the technology available or is not familiar with the innovative small incision technique.

Treatment of keratoconus

CROSS-LINKING (named after the effect it produces) – also known as cross-linking, cross-collagenization of the cornea or CXL – stiffens the cornea and increases its mechanical resistance. The stiffening of the cornea is achieved by increasing the number of connections between the collagen fibers that make up the cornea. It occurs under the influence of UVA irradiation of the cornea. To increase the sensitivity of the superficial layers of the cornea to UVA radiation, the cornea is impregnated with a special photosensitizing substance, riboflavin (vitamin B2). Clinical studies confirm that the effect of riboflavin helps to slow down or stop the disease and in some cases even reverse it. This procedure therefore avoids the need for a corneal transplant.

CAIRS is an advanced, minimally invasive surgical procedure that aims to correct visual impairments by thinning and bulging the cornea. In contrast to conventional implants made of synthetic materials, the CAIRS procedure uses natural, biocompatible corneal segments from a donor, known as KeraNatural™. This natural tissue is designed to integrate seamlessly with your own cornea, reducing the risk of complications associated with synthetic implants.

Why does laser eye surgery cost so much?

Frau bei der Untersuchung mit dem HD-Analysator vor der Laser-Augenkorrektur.

The diagnostic equipment alone costs around 150-300 thousand euros.

Then the laser (the femtosecond laser) costs around 500 thousand for the first step of the procedure, with usage fees per eye ranging from €350-450. These are typical costs for laser eye surgery, which can vary depending on the method and clinic.

Then there is the typical cost range for the excimer laser (which shapes the eye), which is €150,000 at the lower end and almost €450,000 at the upper end (we are certainly at the upper end). This laser is often used in laser eye surgery to correct vision defects such as short-sightedness or long-sightedness.

In addition, there is the cost of training as an eye surgeon, which usually takes around 18 years – most of this time after graduation.

Then there are the costs of the premises, support staff, insurance and other ancillary costs associated with running a world-class clinic in a major city center.

The cost of laser eye surgery if you have health insurance

Will my health insurance cover the costs of laser eye surgery at EyeLaser?

Statutory health insurance companies such as the GKK or SVA do not generally cover the costs of laser eye surgery or lens implants. These insurances only cover medically necessary treatments. As they are only obliged to reimburse the costs of medically necessary services.

Excluded:

  • Correction of cataracts with a monofocal lens (covered by insurance)
  • Treatment for intolerance to both glasses and contact lenses (in some cases)
  • Treatment of defective vision of more than 10 diopters and proven contact lens intolerance (in some cases)
  • Treatment for a large deviation of more than 3 diopters in both eyes and proven contact lens intolerance (in some cases)

We can check these criteria during the preliminary ophthalmologic examination and prepare a clinical report.

If the procedure is not or only partially covered by your health insurance, the treatment costs can usually be deducted as an exceptional expense in your income tax return. However, the costs are covered in full or in part by private health insurance companies.

Please note that EyeLaser is a private practice (with private doctors) and therefore does not offer treatments covered by health insurance. However, many private health insurance companies cover the treatment costs in part or in full. Please enquire about the insurance conditions with your health insurance company before the procedure.

Can I deduct laser eye surgery at EyeLaser from my taxes?

Yes, the costs of laser eye surgery or lens implants are the same as the costs of glasses or contact lenses and are deductible as medical expenses.

The current income tax guidelines state: “In the presence of an illness, visual aids, including laser treatments, are necessary to improve eyesight and are tax-deductible.”

Patients who undergo such an operation have a visual defect and therefore a medical condition. Therefore, these costs are generally recognized as extraordinary expenses even without a medical certificate proving the medical necessity of the procedure.

Deducting laser eye surgery from tax

This is how it works: Enter the cost of the eye operation in the “Medical expenses” column of your annual tax assessment. You can enter the total costs. But there is a deductible of 6 to 12% of your annual income, depending on how high it is. This percentage is reduced by approximately 1% in certain circumstances (single earner, single parent, etc.).

The Ministry of Finance calculates your deductible. The remaining treatment costs affect your tax deductibility.

Exception: If the procedure was medically necessary and you have a certificate to prove this, you can deduct the full amount.

Find out more about extraordinary costs (§ 33 EStG) from the Ministry of Finance. If in doubt, please find out about the tax deductibility of your operating costs.
