Freedom without glasses – even if laser eye surgery is not possible

Imagine waking up in the morning and immediately seeing the world clearly – without glasses or contact lenses. For many patients, laser eye surgery (e.g. LASIK or SmartSight/SMILE) is the way to get there. But what if your eyes are not suitable?

The good news: With the implantable contact lens (ICL) we offer in our EyeLaser Clinic in Vienna and Linz a state-of-the-art solution. This method is even suitable for patients with Very high ametropia, thin cornea or dry eyes. Worldwide, an ICL is deployed every three minutes – and 99% of patients would choose it again.

What is a phakic ICL lens?

Soczewki Fakijne ICL

A phakic lens (ICL = Implantable Collamer Lens) is a wafer-thin, flexible additional lens that in addition to the natural lens is used. It lies invisible between the iris and the lensis not noticeable and remains permanently in the eye.

At EyeLaser Vienna we use the EVO/EVO+ Visian ICL – the world’s leading phakic lens made of Collamer, a biocompatible material with integrated UV protection.

Who is the ICL suitable for?

Soczewki Fakijne ICL

Visual defects that can be corrected

  • Myopia: up to -20 diopters
  • Farsightedness: up to +10 diopters
  • Astigmatism: up to 6 diopters

Anatomical advantages

  • Thin cornea: when laser is not possible
  • Stable keratoconus: often suitable after crosslinking
  • Chronically dry eyes: No additional strain on the cornea
  • Very high visual defects: beyond the laser limits

Reversible: Can be removed or replaced at any time

ICL and presbyopia

From the mid-40s reading glasses often becomes a companion. The ICL can also help here:

  • Monovision correction: one eye for distance vision, the other for near vision

EVO Viva: currently not yet used with EyeLaser, as the study situation is limited → we rely on proven, safe methods

Technology & Security

Ärzte führen eine Laserbehandlung am Auge durch.

The EVO ICL has a central AquaPortwhich maintains the natural aqueous humor flow – an additional iridotomy is not necessary.

Possible side effects (rare):

  • Short-term: pressure increase, halos, glare
  • Long-term: rarely cataract or sizing problems (we avoid these with OCT anterion)

Comparison: ICL vs. LASIK vs. SmartSight/SMILE vs. lens exchange

Procedure Age Correction range Advantages Disadvantages
ICL (phakic lens) 18-45 -20 to +10 dpt reversible, high values, no corneal changes intraocular, higher costs
LASIK 18-45 -8 to +4 dpt fast healing, precise limited for thin cornea / dry eyes
SmartSight / SMILE 18-45 -10 to -0.5 dpt minimally invasive, no flap myopia/astigmatism only
Lens exchange (RLE) from 45 up to ±15 dpt also corrects presbyopia & cataracts natural lens is removed

Aftercare & recovery

If the correction is not 100% perfect, the fine can usually be optimized with a supplementary laser procedure on the cornea.
