Free of glasses and contact lenses thanks to modern medicine

FEMTO-LASIK: Laser eye surgery with modern laser technology revolutionizes treatment safety when correcting defective vision. Glasses are a hindrance in many everyday activities, whether for sport or at work. Contact lenses are not tolerated by everyone and take up valuable time every day. Thanks to the latest methods of laser eye surgery, it is possible to say goodbye to glasses and contact lenses.

Which visual defects can be treated with laser eye surgery?

Depending on the level of the visual defect and the anatomical conditions, laser eye surgery can be used for the following visual defects:

Short-sightedness (myopia): up to -10 diopters (dpt)
Long-sightedness (hyperopia): up to +4 dpt
Astigmatism: up to 5 dpt
Presbyopia: after special clarification
However, all of these values are only guidelines. Whether an operation is likely to be successful must be clarified on a case-by-case basis. The safety of the patient is always paramount.

Which method is used for laser surgery?

The most advanced treatment method is
FEMTO-LASIK, also known as all-laser surgery.
A high-precision laser is used: the femtosecond laser is used to lift the corneal layer above the eye (corneal lamella generation), while the excimer laser is used to treat the defective vision (modulation of the inner corneal layer). In short-sighted patients, the cornea is flattened, in long-sighted patients it is raised in the middle.

In refractive surgery (collective term for operations to correct visual defects), this laser eye treatment is one of the safest and least complicated procedures for correcting visual defects.

How long does laser eye surgery take?

Laser eye surgery takes around 10 minutes, is almost painless and is characterized by a rapid improvement in vision. All procedures are performed on an outpatient basis and under drip anesthesia. Most patients experience freedom from glasses and contact lenses just a few hours after laser eye surgery.

Laser eye surgery at EyeLaser in Vienna

One of the specialists for laser eye surgery in Vienna is Dr. Victor Derhartunian, FEBO, a specialist in ophthalmology and optometry, who, after studying at the University of Vienna, completed his specialist training at the university clinics in Erlangen and Frankfurt am Main. Since 2009, he has also been working in Switzerland, where he collaborates with pioneers in refractive surgery.

In his practice, the focus is not only on the anatomical requirements for laser surgery. The precise definition of the patient’s wishes is a prerequisite for carrying out an operation. After all, a 23-year-old sportsman has completely different visual requirements to a 45-year-old manager or a 58-year-old nurse. All these subtle aspects are discussed during a thorough preliminary examination and any concerns and questions the patient may have are addressed.
