Is it simply a genetic coincidence or can it also indicate a <strong>disease<\/strong>? In this article, you will find out <strong>what forms of heterochromia there are, what causes it and when an ophthalmological examination is advisable<\/strong> &#8211; because sometimes our eyes tell us more than we think!   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is heterochromia?  <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Iris heterochromia<\/strong> refers to a <strong>difference in eye color<\/strong> between or within the <strong>two eyes<\/strong>. This phenomenon is caused by uneven <strong>pigmentation of<\/strong> the<strong>iris<\/strong> and can be <strong>genetic<\/strong> or acquired as a result of a <strong>disease<\/strong>. Depending on how much <strong>melanin<\/strong> is present <strong>in the iris<\/strong>, the eyes appear <strong>blue, brown or in different color combinations<\/strong>. While many cases are harmless, an <strong>examination by an ophthalmologist<\/strong> may be useful if there is an underlying <strong>eye disease<\/strong> such as <strong>Fuchs uveitis syndrome<\/strong> or <strong>inflammatory iritis<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What forms of iris heterochromia are there?  <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formally, a distinction is made between three &#8220;types&#8221; or forms of heterochromia.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Complete heterochromia  <\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong>complete iris heterochromia<\/strong>, a person has <strong>two different eye colors<\/strong>, meaning that each <strong>eye <\/strong>has a completely different <strong>pigmentation<\/strong>. For example, one eye may be <strong>blue<\/strong> and the other <strong>brown<\/strong>. This form of <strong>heterochromia<\/strong> is rare and is usually <strong>genetically determined.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Partial heterochromia  <\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong>partial iris heterochromia<\/strong>, also known as <strong>sectoral heterochromia<\/strong>, one <strong>eye<\/strong> has two different <strong>colors<\/strong>. This means that one section of the <strong>iris<\/strong> has a different <strong>pigmentation<\/strong> to the rest. For example, a predominantly <strong>brown eye<\/strong> may have a blue or green sector. This <strong>difference in eye color<\/strong> is caused by an uneven distribution of <strong>melanin in the iris<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The causes are often <strong>genetic<\/strong>, but <strong>inflammatory diseases such as anterior uveitis<\/strong>, <strong>injuries<\/strong> or <strong>viral infections<\/strong> can also cause <strong>partial heterochromia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Central heterochromia  <\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Central iris heterochromia<\/strong> is a <strong>different coloration<\/strong> within an <strong>eye<\/strong>, whereby the color around the <strong>pupil<\/strong> is different to the outer edge of the <strong>iris<\/strong>. This results in a striking, often ring-shaped color gradient that makes the eye appear particularly unique. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This form of <strong>heterochromia in humans<\/strong> is usually <strong>genetically determined<\/strong> and is caused by an uneven distribution of <strong>melanin in the iris<\/strong>. The more <strong>melanin<\/strong> there is, the darker the iris appears, which in turn protects against <strong>UV rays<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Causes of different eye colors:<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Heterochromia in humans<\/strong> is a rare phenomenon. It is estimated that only around <strong>0.6 to 1 % of the world&#8217;s population<\/strong> have <strong>two different eye colors<\/strong>. The exact frequency varies according to region and genetic predisposition. The main causes are     <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Genetic factors  <\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In most cases, <strong>iris heterochromia<\/strong> is <strong>genetically determined<\/strong> and is caused by a congenital <strong>change in pigmentation<\/strong> in the <strong>iris<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes <strong>heterochromia occurs in humans<\/strong> as an isolated trait, but it can also be associated with certain <strong>genetic syndromes<\/strong>, including:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Waardenburg syndrome<\/strong> &#8211; can cause <strong>deafness<\/strong> as well as <strong>two different eye colors<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Heterochromic cyclitis<\/strong> &#8211; a rare form of <strong>chronic inflammation of the iris<\/strong> that causes color changes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Neurofibromatosis<\/strong> &#8211; a genetic disease that can lead to <strong>heterochromia<\/strong> in rare cases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As <strong>genetic factors<\/strong> play a decisive role, <strong>heterochromia<\/strong> can be inherited over several generations in some families.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Diseases such as Fuchs uveitis syndrome  <\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Diseases that can lead to heterochromia:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fuchs uveitis syndrome (FUS)<\/strong> &#8211; A <strong>chronic inflammation of the iris<\/strong> that can lead to whitening of the affected <strong>iris<\/strong>. Often only one <strong>eye<\/strong> is affected, accompanied by <strong>blurred vision<\/strong> and an increased risk of <strong>glaucoma<\/strong>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Horner&#8217;s syndrome<\/strong> &#8211; Nerve damage can lead to <strong>altered pigmentation of<\/strong> the <strong>iris<\/strong>, often in combination with a reduced <strong>pupil<\/strong> on the affected side.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Anterior uveitis<\/strong> &#8211; An <strong>inflammatory disease of the eye<\/strong> that can lead to <strong>different eye colors<\/strong>. Especially if the <strong>inflammation of the iris<\/strong> lasts longer, the pigmentation can change. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Neurofibromatosis type 1<\/strong> &#8211; This genetic disease can cause <strong>heterochromia<\/strong> and other <strong>changes in the iris<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Waardenburg syndrome<\/strong> &#8211; A rare genetic mutation that can cause <strong>heterochromia<\/strong>, <strong>deafness<\/strong> and changes in skin and hair pigmentation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Multiple sclerosis<\/strong> &#8211; In rare cases, this disease of the <strong>nerve tracts<\/strong> can also have an effect on the <strong>pigmentation of the iris<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Injuries or medication  <\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Eye injuries or certain medications<\/strong> in particular can <strong>change<\/strong>the <strong>pigmentation of the iris<\/strong>and lead to <strong>two different eye colors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Injury-related heterochromia<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Trauma to the eye<\/strong> &#8211; A severe <strong>bruise or cut<\/strong> can <strong>affect melanin production in the iris<\/strong>, causing the <strong>eye<\/strong> to appear <strong>lighter or darker<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Eye operations<\/strong> &#8211; After an operation, e.g. to treat <strong>glaucoma<\/strong>, <strong>pigment changes<\/strong> may occur in rare cases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bleeding in the anterior chamber of the eye<\/strong> &#8211; Can lead to permanent <strong>darkening of the iris<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Medication that can change the color of your eyes<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Glaucoma medication (prostaglandin analogs)<\/strong> &#8211; eye drops such as <strong>latanoprost<\/strong> or <strong>bimatoprost<\/strong> for the treatment of <strong>glaucoma<\/strong> can cause the <strong>iris to darken<\/strong> &#8211; often only in one eye.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Corticosteroids<\/strong> &#8211; Long-term use may in rare cases cause <strong>pigment changes<\/strong> in the <strong>iris <\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is heterochromia a disease?  <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Basically, <strong>heterochromia<\/strong> is not an independent <strong>disease<\/strong>, but a <strong>phenomenon of eye color<\/strong> that is usually <strong>genetically determined<\/strong>. In most cases, people with <strong>two different eye colors<\/strong> have no health restrictions and their <strong>vision<\/strong> is not impaired. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, a <strong>sudden onset of heterochromia<\/strong> can be an indication of an underlying <strong>eye disease<\/strong>. Causes such as <strong>Fuchs&#8217; uveitis syndrome, anterior uveitis or Horner&#8217;s syndrome<\/strong> can lead to a change in the <strong>pigmentation of the iris<\/strong>. <strong>Injuries or medication<\/strong> can also trigger <strong>heterochromia in humans<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When should I see an ophthalmologist for an examination?
